Where Do I Go From Here?

Me at the 2013 OYAN Summer Workshop.

I knew it’d been a long time, but I hadn’t realized it’d been this long.

Hi. I’m Nairam. This is my blog.

I don’t usually like to do this sort of update-personal-life-yay! thing, but I feel like in this case it’s necessary.

I did a year online at The King’s College. I had some fantastic professors and wrote research papers: one on the Robin Hood legends and English forest law for Western Civ I, one comparing the Lusitania and the Titanic disasters and the way we remember them for Western Civ II, and one 5,000 word behemoth on the problem of generalization in history using medieval food as a case study for College Writing II. If it’s not evident, I enjoyed this. I am a nerd. Just not in the cool stereotype sense. I don’t get t-shirts.

(By the way, my Western Civ I & II professor got his Ph.D focusing on twelfth century England. I KNOW.)

I earned 27 credits and maintained a GPA I’m proud of. I did a class on C.S. Lewis (!!!). I’ve been living almost exclusively in Kansas and working for the fantabulous folks at One Year Adventure Novel (we’re releasing Cover Story in August, so if you want to contribute to my many cardboard paper cuts, go order. Also because it’ll be awesome).

And...I’m not going to New York in the fall.

There’s a long list of reasons why, but before anyone panics (you’re not panicking, are you?), I’m only taking a leave of absence, which means I maintain my scholarships as long as I return to King’s by Fall 2014, which I fully plan to.

Most of the reasons why are fairly personal, but two main reasons: I want to go home and be with my family and I want to write. I also want to read (I feel I’ve lost reading good books for fun in the last few years) and critique novels, as I’m currently hoping to make a living as an editor.

As far as writing goes, I have been working slowly on editing Forest of Lies, and officially finished Draft IV about April 27th. I’m onto a new phase in editing that I’m uncomfortable with and excited about. It should be interesting to see where I go. I may, by the end of the school year, start trying to submit it places. We’ll see.

I’m also currently outlining a Hamlet retelling tentatively titled Passion’s Slave which focuses on Horatio. It’s hard to explain further than that.

And, as you may have guessed, by this resurrection post, I hope to begin blogging again. I’m out of practice and out of ideas, but I miss this place, and I hope to get back in a rhythm soon.

That’s what’s up.

Hope to see you around.
